SUMMARY:LWV of San Francisco: The Future of Independent Commissions in San Francisco
DESCRIPTION:San Francisco’s system of independent commissions is one of the strongest tools residents have to hold their government accountable — and it’s now at a critical turning point. \nThe Commission Streamlining Task Force\, created by the voter-approved Proposition E (November 2024)\, is proposing changes that could dramatically weaken public oversight and concentrate more power in the Mayor’s office. This will have real consequences for housing\, public safety\, transit\, and neighborhood services across the city. \nCome to this urgent community forum to understand what’s at stake. You’ll learn what commissions actually do\, how these recommendations could reshape who makes decisions for San Francisco\, and why this moment matters for everyone who cares about transparency\, democracy\, and the future of our city. \n(You may attend this event in person or online. The event recording will be shared with all event registrants.) \nCO-HOSTS \nLeague of Women Voters of San Francisco is a nonpartisan political nonprofit that empowers voters and defends democracy. SUMMARY:LWV of San Francisco: Crossing State Lines for Abortion Access: Short Films and Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Featuring dramatic short “Red White and Blue” and short documentary “Trump’s War on Women\,” followed by a panel discussion with Q&A. \n\n\n\n\nJoin us to examine how the fractured legal landscape around abortion access is leading states like California to strengthen laws to protect its residents — and increasing numbers of people traveling here seeking help. \nWe will screen two short films that shed light on the political and economic challenges of accessing abortions and reproductive health care. A panel discussion will follow\, featuring experts and advocates sharing stories and insights\, and answering your questions. \nWhat to know about abortion access in California \nThe California Constitution guarantees abortion access. More people are traveling here to access reproductive health care as their own states pass aggressive laws to prohibit abortion. Some states are going to great lengths to punish those who seek abortions as well as the health professionals who provide them. \nSan Francisco — as a sanctuary city for abortion access\, legally protecting patients and providers through the San Francisco Reproductive Freedom Act — plays a special role in serving those who need help. Travelers seeking care here may access a range of in-clinic and medication abortions available through services at UCSF\, Planned Parenthood and many other community clinics. \nAbout the films \n‘Red\, White and Blue’ — Rachel (Brittany Snow) is a single parent living paycheck to paycheck. When an unexpected pregnancy threatens to unravel her already precarious position\, she’s forced to cross state lines in search of an abortion. As Rachel contemplates the series of events that necessitated this journey and the obstacles placed in her path\, we learn a heartbreaking truth that means her life will never be the same again. Written\, directed and produced by Nazrin Choudhury\, with producer Sara McFarlane\, and executive producers Level Forward\, Adrienne Becker\, and Samantha Bee. \n‘Trump’s War on Women’ — This short documentary explores the harsh realities of post-Roe America. It features personal stories — and creative work-arounds — of people living in places subject to anti-abortion laws. In light of Trump administration policies\, including its proposed national abortion ban and attempts to abolish all abortion pills\, this film underscores the urgent need for action on reproductive rights. Directed by Robert Greenwald and produced by Brave New Films. \nAbout the host organizations \nThe San Francisco Public Press produces investigative reporting and solutions journalism\, engages diverse communities and promotes public accountability. Our independent local newsroom delivers in-depth and data-driven reporting\, produces the podcast “Civic” and programs radio station KSFP 102.5 FM. We convene live events and discussions that foster civic participation. Learn more at sfpublicpress.org. \nLeague of Women Voters of San Francisco is a nonpartisan political nonprofit that defends democracy. Its members provide education to encourage people to vote in elections and participate in government. They also engage in advocacy to influence public policy that benefits the community. Learn more at lwvsf.org. \nSpecial thanks to Level Forward and Brave New Films for partnering with us to screen these films. \n\n\n\nRoxie Theater\n3117 16th Street\nSan Francisco 94103

SUMMARY:LWV of San Diego: The ABCs of Housing
DESCRIPTION:There is no simple explanation for the housing shortage and the cost of housing. The high cost of housing touches every aspect of life in our community. It is the root cause of homelessness. \nThe League’s presentation on The ABCs of Affordable Housing identifies the key elements affecting housing affordability\, equity\, and the roles government policy and private entities play. The League of Women Voters fosters productive conversations around these themes and supports policies to promote affordable housing for all in our region. \nWebinar presenters are members of the San Diego and North County San Diego Leagues and share the leadership of the Housing & Homelessness Interest Group: Anne Omsted\, Myles Pomeroy\, and Mary Thompson. SUMMARY:LWV of San Jose/Santa Clara: Pros & Cons Presentation on Proposition 50 and Measure A
DESCRIPTION:Members of our League’s Pros & Cons voter education team will present an unbiased analysis of two items that will be on the Nov. 4 ballot. Questions will be encouraged. \nProposition 50 temporarily requires new congressional district maps\, as passed by the Legislature in August 2025\, to be used in California’s congressional elections through 2030. In addition\, it establishes state policy supporting use of fair\, independent\, and nonpartisan redistricting commissions nationwide\, calling for a federal law to propose an amendment to the U.S. Constitution to require redistricting. \nMeasure A authorized Santa Clara County to increase the general sales tax by 0.625% for five years to help address federal cuts enacted by Congress and the President. Cuts are most severe for Medi-Cal services.
