DESCRIPTION:LWVNCSMC Housing Caucus\nProject Homekey\nAsk An Expert: Mike Callagy\, Executive Officer of San Mateo County\nProject Homekey is a statewide effort to sustain and rapidly expand housing for persons experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness. The program provides state funding to local government agencies to purchase and rehabilitate properties—including hotels\, motels\, vacant apartment buildings and other properties—and convert them into permanent\, long-term housing for the unhoused communities. \nThere are currently five Project Homekey sites in San Mateo County\, with a proposed sixth location in Millbrae. \nMike Callagy\, San Mateo County’s Executive Officer\, oversees the efficient running of the County’s daily operations and carries out policies established by the Board of Supervisors. Mike will deliver an insightful presentation titled “Use of Force: What Is It?” \nThe session is scheduled to start at 12:00 noon and will be held in the Redding Library Community Room. We look forward to seeing you there! \nAbout our guest: Mike Thomas spent 43 years in the law enforcement community\, including serving in the United States Coast Guard\, the San Bernardino Police Department\, and the Redding Police Department. \nHe worked in the Redding Police Department from 1987 until he retired in 2011\, serving as a patrol officer\, use of force instructor\, detective\, DARE officer\, and sergeant. He was a use of force instructor at Butte College\, in both the Butte College Law Enforcement Academy and the California Fish & Wildlife Academy\, from 1999 until he retired in 2023. \nMike has an A.A. in Administration of Justice and a B.A. in Liberal Studies\, is a Leadership Redding graduate\, and served 10 years on the Steering Committee\, including as Chair. He is married to Yvonne\, and they have four children and six grandchildren.

DESCRIPTION:A large new Deportation Court recently opened in Concord\, nearly doubling the deportation capacity of the Bay Area.  What is a Deportation Court? What does this mean for our immigrant neighbors and what opportunities and challenges exist to protect and promote human rights? \nThere are a number of ways to support our immigrant neighbors as they journey through the process. Community members are needed to be court observers. Learn about “accompaniment” and how the community can participate. Her journey through homelessness in the early 2000s led her to envision and create for herself – and now assist others to create – a stable work environment where one job is enough and housing is a protected right\, like domestic water use.  \nShe works with local groups such as MPC Ready\, YIMBY Action\, Menlo Together\, and CERT with Menlo Park Fire. Most recently\, Jenny helped Menlo Park submit their 6th Housing Element.
