SUMMARY:Voting Matters: What About Turnout? - a Streaming Presentation and Discussion
DESCRIPTION:The League of Women Voters of Monterey County will present a free talk titled: “Voting Matters: What About Turnout?” at a live-streamed “Lunch and Learn” Meeting at noon on Wednesday\, March 13\, 2024. \nTurn-out drives election results. But to be able to turn out\, a potential voter first has to be registered. In Monterey County\, an estimated 1 in 6 eligible voters are not registered to vote. This presentation will take a close look at population demographics\, registration patterns and ways to increase voter registration and voter turnout in Monterey County. \nOur speaker\, Vinz Koller does research and consults for the US Departments of Labor\, Education and Justice and their state counterparts. He has managed numerous political campaigns and voter registration drives\, and has been a member of the Electoral College in the presidential elections of 2008\, 2016\, and 2020. Koller studied English and Political Science at the University of Zurich\, Switzerland\, and received his Master’s degree in International Policy Studies from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies\, Monterey. \nAll current League members will receive the meeting link on Monday\, March 11.   \nNon members can send a message to LWVmryco [at] gmail.com  requesting an invitation.

DESCRIPTION:First proposed in 1923 and passed by Congress in 1972\, the Equal Rights Amendment was subsequently ratified by only 35 states at that time\, falling short of the 38 ratifications required. DESCRIPTION:Our February Lunch Speaker is Letitia Clark. \n She was elected to the Tustin City Council in 2016\, is a third generation Orange County native and proud alum of Tustin High School. \n Clark is a champion of youth in Tustin and helped to launch the city-wide Lemonade Day program and Girls in Government Summit hosted by the City of Tustin and in partnership with the Tustin Unified School District. \n Clark is an award-winning Public Affairs professional with several years of experience in the public and non-profit sectors. She currently serves as the Chief Communications Officer for the South Orange County Community College District. \n Clark is also a bestselling and award-winning author with her 2021 release of a children’s book titled Mommy is the Mayor and a 2023 self-help book titled Baby’s Room to the Board Room: A guide for working moms on how to transition from bottle feeding to boss moves. \n Clark earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Xavier University of Louisiana\, a Master of Arts degree in Public Policy from New England College and a Certificate in Non-Profit Management from the John F. Kennedy School of Government\, Harvard University. She is currently pursuing her doctorate degree in public administration at California Baptist University. \n She lives in Tustin with her husband\, Zach\, and three children.

(OH) David Pepper. He answers the question we are all asking ourselves – What can I do to make a difference? – using a footprint as a powerful call to action. Save the date to attend Lunch with League on Wednesday\, Feb. 21st.\n \nBio:\n\nDavid Pepper is a lawyer\, writer\, political activist\, former elected official\, adjunct professor\, and served as the chair of a major political party in Ohio from 2015 to 2021. In that role\, he was engaged in numerous battles and extensive litigation over voter suppression and election laws in the Buckeye State\, as well as reform efforts to enhance voting and end gerrymandering.   \nPepper regularly appears on MSNBC\, CNN and C-SPAN discussing these issues.  He serves as a Senior Fellow with the Kettering Foundation\, helping the Foundation advance its mission of supporting pro-inclusive democracy. He also teaches election and voting rights law as an adjunct professor at the University of Cincinnati College of Law.  \nBorn and raised in Cincinnati\, David is a fifth-generation Cincinnatian who served on the Cincinnati City Council from 2001 to 2005 and the Hamilton County Commission from 2006 to 2010.
