Election Reforms: What Should We Prioritize for 2013 and Beyond?

This morning, our own Trudy Schafer moderated the Future of California Elections conference panel “Election Reforms: What Should We Prioritize for 2013 and Beyond?”

Description

California has an opportunity to champion election reforms that will increase voter participation and access, promote election security and accountability, and improve the way our elections are run. This panel discussed potential priorities for electoral reform.

Panelists

Kim Alexander, California Voter Foundation
Hillary Sklar, Disability Rights California
Gail Pellerin, Santa Cruz County Registrar of Voters
Lori Shellenberger, American Civil Liberties Union
Arturo Vargas, National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO)

Outcomes

In 2012, as a Future of California Elections collaborator, we successfully advanced same-day voter registration, strengthened the National Voter Registration Act, helped implement online voter registration and improved the state voter guide. Originally brought together by The James Irvine Foundation, this group recently became an independent project. Today we met with policymakers, elections officials and voter advocates in Sacramento for the first-ever Future of California Elections conference to expand voter participation and improve the effectiveness of elections in our state. We will be sharing more information about this collaboration as we go forward.
