Save the Date!

County League Day will kick off a series of five Community Forums on Sea Level Rise, Wildfire Danger, and other climate issues challenging San Mateo County. The Leagues of San Mateo County are working with the Special District, One Shoreline, to provide education for our communities, both inland and along the San Mateo Coast. League members will help connect with people and organizations that will be impacted by these increasing hazards.

In 1878, the U.S. Congress declared George Washington's birthday to be a federal holiday. The first observation was February 22, 1879. The Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1970 changed the date of the holiday to the third Monday in February. This change means the holiday falls between February 15 and 21. The holiday goes by various names in U.S. States; in California, the holiday is called Presidents' Day.

A Celebration of Women's Rights

In 1975, the United Nations celebrated its inaugural International Women's Day. Each year's celebration has a unique theme. The 2019 theme was "Think Equal, Build Smart, Innovate for Change."

International Women's Day had its beginnings in the socialist and communist movements in recognition of working women. The first observation was in 1909.

On March 13, 2020, the City of Sacramento cancelled all public events hosted on City property until further notice because of the ongoing COVID-19 crisis. As a result, the Environmental Council of Sacramento (ECOS) canceled its 2020 Sacramento Earth Day Celebration scheduled for April 26, 2020 at Southside Park.

Memorial Day was initially called Declaration Day. In May 1868, U.S General John A. Logan first called for the observance of Decoration Day nationally:

The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land.

On this day in 1920, the United States of America certified the 19th amendment to its constitution prohibiting any state or the federal government from denying any citizen the right to vote on the basis of gender.

In August 1973, Congress approved a resolution designating August 26 "Women's Equality Day."
