Today, the League of Women Voters of California issued the following statement from Deputy Director Dora Rose in response to California’s proposed mid-cycle redistricting: 

“We oppose all attempts to gerrymander congressional lines on a partisan basis. California’s independent redistricting commission is the gold standard — a national model for fair elections, community input, and transparency. We understand the threat authoritarianism poses, but the way to fight it is not by breaking our own democratic safeguards. You don’t save democracy by imitating those who seek to destroy it — you save it by inspiring voters with bold ideas and principled leadership.”
