League of Women Voters v. Trump
The League of Women Voters of California stands with our national organization and voting rights advocates against President Trump’s March 25, 2025, Executive Order, an unlawful attack on democracy. Among other anti-voter features, this Order forces the Election Assistance Commission (EAC) to require “documentary proof of citizenship” for federal voter registration.
Represented by the ACLU, ACLU of DC, Brennan Center for Justice at NYU Law, the Legal Defense Fund, Latino Justice PRLDEF, and AAJC, this coalition is suing because this Order unlawfully alters federal voter registration processes without congressional approval, violating both the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) and the U.S. Constitution. By imposing unnecessary barriers, it risks disenfranchising millions of eligible voters, especially people of color, women, naturalized citizens, individuals with disabilities, and low-income individuals.
After initially urging the EAC to reject this Executive Order, this coalition has now escalated its response by filing a lawsuit against Trump. The League and these voting rights groups are committed to protecting the fundamental right to vote for all Americans and will not allow this administration to undermine our democracy.
