Advocacy Update

If you follow us on Facebook or Instagram, you’ve seen our Advocacy Team hard at work fighting back against voter suppression in California. Recent national efforts to roll back diversity initiatives, weaken the courts, and target immigrant and LGBTQ+ communities are reminders that democracy depends on the people who defend it, and that is what we do at the LWVC. We’re fighting voter suppression efforts like proposed voter ID laws, attacks on vote-by-mail, and attempts to repeal the Voter’s Choice Act. We’re also supporting bills to strengthen campaign finance rules, improve language access, and protect California’s Constitution. Stay connected and follow our advocacy work on social media or check our bill status report.
Re-cap of Housing Webinar and Last Webinar in the Series
Our Advocacy Webinar Series continued this month with an excellent panel discussion. We heard from Corey Smith with Housing Action Coalition, Noerena Limón at the Casita Coalition, and Cesar Covarrubias from the Kennedy Commission. They offered up a rich conversation covering the history of the housing problem in California, current legislation, and areas for advocacy and solutions. Missed the event? You can watch the recording!
As we continue to work toward meaningful change in the housing space, we encourage you to join the discussion by engaging with LWVC’s Housing and Homelessness Interest Group! You can learn more about this group and all of our Interest Groups here.
The final webinar in this Advocacy Series will focus on immigration and will occur at the end of May. Stay tuned for the date and time!
The LWVC Takes Action to Protect Mailed Ballots in California
The LWVC has filed a motion to intervene in a lawsuit that threatens to disenfranchise hundreds of thousands of voters by blocking the counting of mailed ballots received after Election Day. Rep. Darrell Issa’s controversial suit challenges California’s vote-by-mail system and risks undermining fair access to the ballot for voters statewide. Read the full press release to learn more about The LWVC’s bold action to intervene in this suit to protect voting rights.
