Why Do Final Results Take So Long?
Election results are certified by the CA Secretary of State. Note that final results were not due from local counties until December 7 and the CA Secretary of State has until December 14 to certify results state-wide.
During each election cycle, hundreds of thousands of ballots are not counted on Election Day. Many vote-by-mail ballots arrive on Election Day. Local elections officials must confirm each voter’s registration status, signature on the envelope, and ensure each person did not vote elsewhere. Provisional ballots go through a similar process. Ballots that cannot be machine-read must be remade by elections officials.
For the most up-to-date vote counts before the statewide certified results are published, contact a county elections office directly.
