Bail bond photo by Eric Risberg from The Associated Press

The League of Women Voters urges support for SB 10, which seeks to fix California’s broken bail system. Currently 46,000 Californians are in county jails because they cannot make bail. While wealthy defendants can secure their own release, poor defendants cannot. Poor Californians are sitting in jail for weeks, months, even years awaiting trial, all the while at risk of losing their jobs, their homes and even their children.

The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) took the necessary first steps toward improving voter registration services offered online and at its 174 field offices across the state, though it still will need to address some major issues.

Beginning this month, people who are eligible and affirmatively choose to register when applying for or renewing a driver license or identification card at a DMV field office will:

As election officials and reformers gathered for an annual event in Los Angeles, the goal of upgrading California's elections took on special significance this year in the face of a crisis of confidence in democracy itself.

At the Future of California Elections Conference yesterday, the focus remained on improving the mechanics of elections administration with an eye toward the threat of politics gumming up the works.

In a sign of how modest expectations have become of Californians actually casting ballots, elections officials and advocates alike found relief Monday in the final tally showing 37% of voters cast ballots in June — small compared with total registration but the highest for a nonpresidential primary since 1998.
