VICTORY FOR DEMOCRACY: California Voters Reject Prop 39
Voters Defeat Voter Suppression Initiative and Protect Ballot Access in California
SACRAMENTO, CA — California voters sent a clear and unified message in their defeat of Prop 39. They will not tolerate attempts to roll back voting rights, expose private information to identity theft, and waste hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars to implement a measure built on the lies of election denialism.
Prop 39 was backed by right-wing billionaires allied with President Trump. It would have instituted burdensome, unnecessary ID requirements and disproportionately disenfranchised seniors, students, low-income voters, and working families. Voters turned out to strike it down, marking a major victory for free and fair elections in California.
“President Trump’s billionaire allies tried to sell Californians a lie and make voters pay the price. Voters saw through it. They rejected Prop 39’s barriers to voting, rejected a system that would discard eligible voters’ ballots, and rejected spending hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars on this scheme,“ said Dora Rose, Deputy Director of the League of Women Voters of California. “California’s elections belong to the voters, and today the voters emphatically defended that principle.“
The League of Women Voters of California extends its deepest gratitude to the Californians for Voting Rights campaign and the civic leaders, civil rights organizations, labor partners, and grassroots volunteers who worked tirelessly to make this victory possible. Together, we informed voters across the state and safeguarded California’s trusted, accessible elections.
