My Promise to Fight for California’s Democracy

When the LWVC Takes a Stand, We Don't Back Down (Helen Hutchison holds up sign that reads "We did this shit already")

As I step into the role of Interim Executive Director of the League of Women Voters of California, I feel both at home and aware of how the landscape has shifted. As a lifelong League member, former Board Member, and someone who’s held this position before, this work is second nature to me. But the world we face today is profoundly different, and the challenges—misogyny and threats to democracy—are on a scale we haven’t seen in decades.

But, I want to remind you that we have seen this before, and no one is in a better place to stand against it than the League. Democracy is rooted in our lived experiences and stories. Let me share one that shows this truth for me.

When the Supreme Court issued the Dobbs decision, I was at the LWVUS convention in Colorado. Everything shifted after this. Alongside LWVC staff, League delegates, and countless others, we joined a rally to resist this devastating ruling. We did what we do best: we stood up to this attack on women. Pictured above is the sign I carried—a message for myself, my mother, my grandmothers, my daughter, and all of us.

That moment became part of my story. It reminded me that suffrage, access to birth control, and the Voting Rights Act are not distant history—they’re recent wins. My mother once told me how she accompanied her grandmother to vote in the first election women could participate in. She also warned how easily progress can be lost and how vigilance is always required.

During that moment in Colorado, alongside my colleagues, friends, and strangers, I promised myself that I would not waver – no matter how many times we’ve faced this struggle. As your Interim Executive Director, I vow to carry that same determination—we’ve taken on these challenges before, and we will rise to them again.

But I need you. The League needs you. We don’t rush into every battle—but when we take a stand, we don’t back down, we don’t compromise our values, and we see it through.

Your support on 12/31 will help us continue this fight. Please consider a gift of any size—and let’s get this shit done, again.

In League,

Helen Signature
