Monthly Highlights for October 2024

November 5 is nearly here! As the countdown to Election Day ticks down, the LWVC is all in—working through every angle to support voters across California. Our team and dedicated volunteers are answering questions, directing voters to resources, and ensuring accessible voting for all. On the advocacy side, we’re monitoring ballot measures and gearing up for 2025 grassroots-driven action through Program Planning. Plus, applications are still open to join our Board of Directors! Read on to learn how to stay informed, and snag some voting swag before Election Night!

Voter Engagement Update: Final Countdown to Election Day and a Tribute to Our Volunteers

With the election 4 days away, we’re busy meeting the needs of voters by answering calls and emails from across the state with questions about where to vote, what’s on the ballot, the impact of each issue, and much more. And on Election Day, we’ll be there to respond from the moment polls open at 7am until they close at 8pm. Please visit our site for comprehensive, last-minute election information!

We also want to thank our volunteers who are working tirelessly to ensure California voters have all the information they need to make informed choices. They’re still reaching out to candidates through calls, emails, social media, and even snail mail, encouraging them to submit their profiles on VOTE411. It’s a huge effort, but our volunteers, some with over 30 years of dedication, know how important this information is to voters.

The League on “The No No Show”

The No No Show with Nicole Adler: Season 2, Episode 5. Special Guest: Stephanie Doute (Wed., October 30 at Noon (PST))

Our Executive Director, Stephanie Doute, recently appeared on The No No Show with Nicole Adler, a motivational speaker and advocate for disability and LGBTQ rights, to discuss the 2024 presidential election’s impact on women’s rights and the League’s role in promoting informed, equitable voter participation. Together, they explored the League’s commitment to nonpartisanship, equitable voting access, the complexities of the Electoral College, and the need for civic education for future generations. The conversation also highlighted the League’s ongoing work to ensure accessible voting and the critical role of local engagement in creating positive change.

Advocacy Update

Between October and February, we’re working hard despite the legislative break—wrapping up the year, monitoring elections, advocating on ballot measures, and collaborating with partners to shape next year’s agenda. We’re ushering in the new Legislation Committee, distributing resources to local Leagues for meeting with state representatives, and developing a toolkit for biennial Program Planning. This planning defines key issues for League study, public education, and action at local, state, and national levels, guided by grassroots input. In early 2025, local Leagues will propose state-level priorities, and after a review, the LWVC board will present the 2025-2027 Recommended Program for final approval at our June Convention. Want to get involved? Reach out to your local League President!

Senate Candidate Forum Recording

Did you miss the LWVC co-sponsored Senate Candidate Forum on October 8? No problem! The recording is on our website. Hear directly from California’s U.S. Senate Candidates Steve Garvey and Adam Schiff as they explain their positions on critical issues facing California and our country. The forum was sponsored by the League of Women Voters of California, ABC7, and Univision.

MyLO: Powering Voter Access and Strengthening Democracy Nationwide

All year, the LWVC supports Leagues nationwide through our web hosting service, MyLO, or “My League Online.” This resource becomes crucial during election season, delivering reliable election information to voters across the country. This month alone, the 150+ League websites hosted on MyLO had over half a million views—helping voters get what they need! With Leagues across 35 states and D.C., we unite to provide nonpartisan election information that empowers voters across the country, enriching democracy itself. If you have questions about MyLO, email mylo@lwvc.org.
