Opposition to Unlawful Executive Order on Voting Regulations
The League of Women Voters of the United States, Brennan Center for Justice, ACLU, NAACP, and the Legal Defense Fund have jointly addressed the U.S. Election Assistance Commission regarding the President’s Executive Order of March 25, 2025. They assert that the Commission cannot comply with the Order as it unlawfully mandates the inclusion of documentary proof of citizenship for voter registration and threatens to withhold federal funds from states that do not enforce this requirement.
The Order attempts to reshape federal voter registration procedures without congressional approval, violating both the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) and the U.S. Constitution. Furthermore, it imposes undue burdens on voters, risking the disenfranchisement of millions, particularly marginalized communities.
The signatory organizations urge the Commission to refrain from any response to the Executive Order, which undermines its autonomy and bipartisan integrity.
