LWVC Letter of Support for SB 423
The League of Women Voters of California writes in strong support of your bill, SB 423 (Gonzalez), the Detention Facility Transparency Act. arrives at an extraordinary and alarming moment. Under the Trump administration’s mass detention agenda, immigration detention has climbed to the highest level ever recorded – surpassing 70,000 people held nationwide for the first time in the agency’s history, an increase of roughly 84 percent in a single year, and driven overwhelmingly by the detention of people with no criminal conviction. Deaths, medical neglect, sexual abuse, and crisis calls mount daily inside the facilities holding detainees. California has not been spared. SB 423 responds directly to that crisis by guaranteeing public access to the records that reveal what is happening behind detention walls.
