Legislative Victories for California: 43 Bills Signed into Law

We have some incredible news to share: Governor Gavin Newsom has signed 43 of the 46 League-supported bills that made it through the California Legislature this session, including 11 of our 12 top priority bills!

These victories represent months of hard work by the League of Women Voters of California, our coalition partners, advocates, and supporters like you. Together, we’ve helped advance legislation protecting voting rights, safeguarding voters and election workers from intimidation, strengthening government transparency, improving access to housing, defending reproductive rights, protecting immigrant communities, advancing criminal justice reform, and addressing climate change and water issues.

While we’re celebrating all 43 victories, we’re especially excited to highlight two bills that Governor Newsom signed just yesterday, on the very last day he could take action on legislation this year: SB 1414 and AB 2599. Both represent major victories for the League and our coalition partners, and we’re thrilled to see them cross the finish line!

A Victory for Fair Maps in San Bernardino County

SB 1414 (Senator Eloise Gómez Reyes) establishes an Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission for San Bernardino County, beginning with the redistricting cycle following the 2030 Census.

For too long, county supervisors have had the power to draw their own district lines. This new law transfers that responsibility to an independent commission, giving residents a greater voice in shaping their communities’ political representation.

The League was proud to co-sponsor this legislation alongside Inland Empire United and California Common Cause. Our deepest thanks go to Senator Eloise Gómez Reyes for championing this bill, Governor Newsom for signing it, and the many community organizations, advocates, and San Bernardino County residents who worked tirelessly to make it happen.

A Historic Step Toward Transparency and Reparative Justice

AB 2599 (Assemblymember Isaac Bryan) is another landmark victory. This legislation requires corporations to disclose historical ties to slavery and profits derived from it, bringing greater transparency to California’s corporate history and advancing truth, accountability, and the possibility of repair.

We are especially grateful to Assemblymember Isaac Bryan and his co-authors for their leadership, Governor Newsom for signing this historic legislation, and the Alliance for Reparations, Reconciliation, & Truth (ARRT), along with the many community partners and advocates whose tireless organizing made this victory possible.

Understanding our history is essential to building a more just and equitable future.

43 Victories. One Stronger California.

None of this happens without you. Whether you contacted your legislators, responded to an action alert, supported our advocacy, or helped spread the word, you are part of these victories. Thank you for standing with us.

Of course, our work is far from over. As we celebrate these legislative achievements, we’re also working to protect voters and safeguard our elections this November.

If you’d like to help sustain this work, please consider making a gift to the League today. Your support makes it possible for us to advocate for policies that strengthen our democracy and improve the lives of Californians.
